Failure Experience in Losing Weight among Obese Highschool Girls

Abstract

|
Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the meaning of failure experience of weight loss in obese highschool girls.
Methods: Data were collected through focus group interviews with seven female students in July, 2013. The collected data were analyzed based on the six-step theme analysis method suggested by Braun & Clarke to describe the meaning level of repeated topics or patterns.
Results: The finding was classified into eight themes: ¡®Not men, not women, gender of the third, an obese person¡¯, ¡®a feeling of being an inferior person¡¯, ¡®Gaze of others influence my everyday life¡¯, ¡®wounded heart by significant others¡¯, ¡®Binge, regret, and the vicious cycle of fasting¡¯, ¡®rationalizing failure¡¯, ¡®not blaming others but myself¡¯, ¡®Diet that can not give up¡¯.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that health education teachers should provide the education and intervention programs to effectively manage stress and to establish positive self-image for obese highschool girls.
